Earlier poll made me realize that I haven’t calculated the damage I did to my finances in a while. I am looking for the approximate amount of money spent on down payment, monthly payments, and fixing/upgrading your cars. Here is my list:

1991 Ford Taurus SHO. Bought for $4000 cash. Spent $1300 on maintenance and tires. Trade in value $2000, net spent $3300

2000 Toyota Tundra - Traded in my Taurus SHO for it, and gave them $2000 in cash. Monthly payments of $600. Drove it for 2 years or so, my dad took over the payments and kept the truck. Cost ~ $18400

2003 Honda Civic Si - MRSP $19400, bought it for just over $1600. Had $350 per monthly payments for 2 years or so, plus new wheels and tires which I sold later, then another new set of wheel and tires, maybe $1000 in upgrades. Cost $9400

2000 Subaru Legacy Wagon L - traded in my Suzuki TL1000S. I think it cost around $10000 or so and I am pretty sure we paid it off.

2004 VW Touareg V6 - traded in the Civic Si, payment of $400 for 2 years or so, cost around $10000.

2008 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium - Traded in the Touareg, paid around $300 per month for 2 years or so, cost around $7500

2010 Subaru Outback 2.5 Premium - Traded in the 2008 Outback, cost around $350 monthly for two years, cost around $8400

2008 (I think) Subaru Impreza Sport - bought used for my ex-wife, traded in the 2000 Legacy Wagon, cost was around $300 per month for 3 years or so, until I got rid of them both - around $11000

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X 5.7L HEMI - traded in the 2013 Outback, cost $465 per month, for 6 months, $2800

2013 Honda Pilot EX - Lease for 2.5 years, $300 or so per month, cost $9000

2014 FIAT 500 Abarth GQ Convertible - put down $1500 in cash, invested around $2000 in wheels and parts, and been paying $250 per month for 12 months now, still own it - $6500

2016 Subaru Forester XT Premium - traded in the Pilot, pay $480 per month for the last 8 months, $3800 or so.

2001 Honda Shadow ACE 750 - bought new, paid around $9000 after interest, sold for $2300 years down the road, net cost $6700

199* Suzuki TL1000S - Can’t even remember, but some money down and $160 per month I think for about a year, call it $3000

200* Suzuki V-Strom 1000 - sold for what I bought it or so, just about no cost.

Grand total - excluding insurance, taxes, fees, registrations - $109800 in 17 years, for a total of $6458 per year , total of $538 per month . This is all very approximate - I don’t remember the exact number of months I had payments on each car, but anyway you look at it, piss poor financial decisions. The very first car I bought new - Toyota Tundra - is still kicking just fine. My dad took over the payments when I was done with it, and kept it. It has 110k miles, and he fixed a throttle position sensor, changed the shocks, fixed the key cylinder thingie where you insert the key to start the car, and did the brakes twice. Lets just say that my parents are better with money than me :)

I could have been close to retirement now if I drove a $200 per month car, and invested $338 in a mutual fund for last 17 years. Well, not quite retired, but I’d have $142000 extra in my retirement. Damn...

Now when I think about it, I should have too... makes me sick to see these numbers and idiotic decisions.

To top it off, I am thinking about selling my current cars and getting a pick up

I’m not regretful of the money I have spent on cars, but I don’t want to see it all layed out in front of me in one lump sum either.

However I can take comfort in the fact that I would not have saved the money that I spent on cars if I didn’t have the cars. I would have pissed it away at the bar or on other expensive hobbies.

If I totaled it up it would be depressing. I’ll just look forward to my next bad decision.

Seriously though. I’ll bet I can get this for less than 5K.

FWIW, regardless of the total, I wouldn’t change a dime I spent on any of my cars.

I have an excel sheet at home of the money spent on the cars I’ve flipped and the end profit/loss. It’s fortunately a positive end result for the cars bought to flip. Factoring in cars purchased to daily and the money wrapped in to them, I don’t wanna look.

No clue about the Outback.

2006 Corolla was given to me by one of my parents friends from college. Got new front disks and pads (did you know that Corollas have different rear drums if they were built in Japan vs US built cars?) and we spent a weekend cleaning the mold out of the carpet (was left outside with one of the windows down through the winter, discovered later that you can only activate 3 windows at once). Super cheapo winter tires replaced rotted all seasons. Needed a new intake manifold gasket when cylinder 3 went lean, causing a CEL and the bulb behind the HVAC controls went out. All in was about $1000. Traded in in spring 2014 on a 2013 BRZ for $4,200 I believe.

2004 Mini Cooper was purchased in Spring 2016 for $3000 and 2 old kayaks. New stereo and amp to replace ebay special installed by previous owner: $200. Front left valve stem failed: $0. Took it to the shop before heading up to school for oil change, AC recharge, and idler pulley replacement: ~$95. Driving lights, brackets, and storage tray for interior: $100. Cost so far: $3,395 + 2 kayaks. Smiles? Nearly infinite.

Of the 13 cars I’ve bought in the last 6 years the most expensive one to purchase was my current daily driver. 4 years and 115k km ago I spent €3000 to buy it.

Excluding the parts car I bought all 12 others are still on the road as far as I know.

I’ll bite. I’m only going to do the only car I really sunk money into though ;-)

‘92 Honda Civic LX- Purchased for $2,000

Speedometer-$200

Tires- $370ish with balance and alignment.

Brakes- $200 new calipers, $80 New brake hoses, $30 New wheel cylinders and drum hardware. All chasing a dragging brake that turned out to be a corroded booster pushrod. Actual fix cost $10 can of WD-40. Plus I payed an additional $200 stupid tax because of this, but that’s a whole other story.

Driveline- Two CV axles $120. When the clutch went out I put on a $200 lightweight flywheel and payed $300 for a rebuilt EX transmission (shorter gear ratio) and the clutch itself was $60, I believe. I got $4 from the scrap yard I took the old parts to :(

Misc- $200 on other parts gaskets, fluids, etc.

Sold for- $1,900

Total spent (including difference in sale and purchase price)= $1,750

And I only had the car about a year and a half.

If you want to feel better about yourself, check out this:

1. Got a 1998 Grand Prix in 2000 for basically free. Put 18" wheels on it ($2000 for wheels and tires) and needed a couple alternators and a power steering pump (another roughly $600). So basically $2600 sunk into it.

1.5. Got 2 motorcycles, a Honda Nighthawk 250 for $400 which immediately needed tires ($250), a kick stand ($190), and paint ($100 in supplies). Then I bought a CB-1 for $2500 which I got into an accident with and spent another $2,860 repairing ($700 new engine, $1100 in labor to rebuild the engine, $400 for paint, $200 for new brakes, $300 for new tires, $60 for a battery, $20 for spark plugs, $80 for plug wires). So that’s $6,300 in shitty motorcycles.

2. Sold the GP for $3,000 I think, put that towards a Subaru WRX for $15,000. I spent $600 + one XBox in trade for stereo stuff. Spent $1500 on an exhaust system, $500 for a UTEC ECU piggyback, $200 for a CAI, $1400 for tires, $400 for brake upgrades. So $19,600 spent on it total.

3. Sold it for $12,000, got a free van which I had for a month before it was totaled. Got like $1500 in insurance. I also bought a brand new CBR1000RR for about $13,000. Spent about $1,000 on CBR upgrades (undertail, lights, brake upgrades). Sold that later for $3400 after I dumped it at the track.

4. Got a Dodge Ram 2500 Turbo Diesel for $12,000. Spent $250 on a short shifter, $500 on a CAI, $350 on a Zilla tune, $400 for some H2 wheels + tires plus $600 worth of machining to make them fit (this should have been half that but the first machinist bored them wrong so I paid a second one to do them right). It also needed ball joints and both front hubs replaced ($650), the oil cooler rebuilt ($1500 at a shop that ripped me off), and a door latch replaced ($60). So $16310 all in. Bonus, I sold the step bars off the sides for $150.

5. Traded the Ram in for a 2007 Cobalt LS. This was during the Carpocalypse, so I got the plainest, basest, no frills ‘Balt for $10,000 brand new. This is also when gas was just starting to come down off record highs. I got $4,500 trade in for the truck, I still owed $9,000 on it. I had to put 2 ignition switches in the Cobalt, first one cost me $475, the second time $325 (I guess they got faster at it). So I had $10,800 in the ‘Balt.

6. Balt was hit and totaled in a wreck. I ended up getting $7500 for it from the insurance man. I owed $7,000, so net profit of $500. I then bought a brand new 2012 Cruze for $20,000 out the door.

So my total outlay for cars and parts is $101,610. But I’ve recouped about $25,050. So I’m in the hole about $76,560. But here’s the real kicker.. I drove the GP from 2000 to 2006, and bought both bikes (step 1.5) in 2005. I got the Cruze new at the end of 2011 as a 2012 model, so basically all that money changed hands in a period of only 6 years.

Oh, to be young and in the Navy again... a guaranteed pay check and no responsibilities.

Probably somewhere around $0.

Not including insurance, registration, and gas I think I break even. The pattern has been: buy an interesting car with a big issue, fix issue, drive car for a while, and sell. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Track time and equipment however...I try not to think about that figure.

I tend to keep cars for a long time - we’ll see how long I keep the one I’ve got now. Previous car was an ‘05 Mazda 3s hatch that I had for 7 years and 90k miles. I bought my ‘08 M3 sedan in 2012 (when I was 34), so I’m at 4+ years right now. Nothing with 4 doors is drawing me away at the moment, so I could see owning it at least another 4, barring any major problems (knocks wood).

Arguably the Lexus IS the better car, but I just love the Merc so much. The fact that I still own it is completely irrational at this point but I’ve fixed most of its issues and I’d frankly like to keep driving it for some time. It’ll be paid off next summer and the only thing I could see replacing it with would be another S600/65 but I might just keep this one around and mod it instead of buying another S class. I’ve been thinking pretty heavily on buying a C6 ZR1 for my next big purchase but I’ll probably let the depreciation go a bit further.

Just on purchasing?

Around 5,000 on the Merc, then 1,500 to change it for the Toyota, around 7,000 in price difference when my mother gave me her Civic, then 2,000 for the Mini, 500 in the change to the Speed, 3,000 in the change to the Golf which was stolen then about 1,000 to the Z and maybe like 1000 in depreciation in the time I had the 4 Runner so:

So 21,000 in cars plus like 6,000 on the Ducati.
